Located on the outskirts of Te Awamutu, CHT’s residential aged care facility comprises of a 60 bed resthome with a secure dementia care unit. Set on a large greenfield site, the facility was architecturally designed with innovation and service delivery in mind.
The accommodation was split into four wings (two of which were to become the Dementia Care Unit), each comprising of 10 bedrooms with ensuites and a shared lounge/dining and kitchenette facility. Linked to these by a common corridor, which also included a lounge and family room, was the main accommodation block which surrounded a large internal courtyard. This wing comprised of 20 bedrooms with ensuites, two lounges and kitchenettes, the main commerical kitchen, laundry, storage, staff room and offices.
The extensive landscaping design also incorporated a secure courtyard for the dementia wing and the large internal courtyard for general use. Each area was framed with timber arbors and pergolas boards.
