OUR HISTORY

Livingstone’s roots stem back to 1940’s Te Awamutu and a previous incarnation founded by the Cavanagh Brothers. Specialising in commercial, dairy company and public-sector work, the company was able to grow with a small team of local builders.

Fast forward a few decades and a couple of likely farm laborers named Mike and David Livingstone joined the company. David joined the Cavanagh’s first after walking away from his farm job and Mike joined soon after. Shortly after this, the teenagers both started carpentry apprenticeships.
The brothers seized their first big opportunity a few years later when they were offered shares in the business. What followed this however surprised them both.

In 1982 the company became Livingstone Bros Limited after David and Mike, then aged 21 and 16 respectively, were approached to buy into the business. The company began catering to the wider commercial and residential demands of the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Taranaki Regions, establishing an office in Hamilton in the early 1990s to cater for growing demand. In 2010 a name change to Livingstone Building NZ reflected a nationwide expansion. By adapting to the market and meeting customer needs, the business continued to evolve and grow. Livingstone Group NZ now operates Livingstone Building NZ, Livingstone BOP, and TA Leasing. They are behind landmark developments the length of the nation, and through a dedicated apprenticeship training scheme, they continue to impart their skills and those of their predecessor, onto the sector.

The Livingstone’s remained in touch with company founder Pat Cavanagh until his death in 2003, even inviting him to appear in the company’s mandatory annual team photo.

Despite now managing major projects throughout New Zealand, Mike and David are known for their hometown commitment and their determination to continue operating their workforce out of Te Awamutu.

Together with fellow Directors Peter Clarke and Andrew Riley, and the 250 employees, these former farm laborers from Te Awamutu have grown Livingstone from a small building unit to a well respected, national construction firm, responsible for the development of landmark buildings throughout Waikato and beyond.

This homegrown success story has seen the company prosper for over 70 years of building bubbles, recessions, troughs, and peaks.
