Our history

First established as Cavanagh Brothers in 1947, Livingstone Building has grown to become a nationally recognised commercial and industrial construction company. Headquartered in Hamilton, we operate from five regional branches throughout the North Island.

The Cavanagh brothers

Keith and Pat Cavanagh joined up to start the Cavanagh Bros Ltd construction company.

1977
David Livingstone (Director)

Joins Cavanagh Bros Ltd as an apprentice.

1979
Mike Livingstone (Director)

Joins Cavanagh Bros Ltd as an apprentice.

1981
Cavanagh & Livingstone Bros Ltd

David and Mike Livingstone become 50% shareholders in Cavanagh Bros Ltd. The company changes its name to Cavanagh & Livingstone Bros Ltd.

1985
Peter Clarke (Director)

Joins Livingstone Bros Ltd as an apprentice.

1986
New Te Awamutu Office

Livingstone opens a new office in Te Awamutu on Rickit Road. Keith and Pat Cavanagh sell their remaining shares to David and Mike Livingstone. The company changes its name to Livingstone Bros Ltd.

1995
McDonald's

Our first project with McDonald's was in Te Awamutu. This relationship continues to grow and is now one of our key clients - building McDonald's from Kaitaia to Invercargill and over in the islands.

1999
Hamilton branch opens

A new office and yard opened in Maui Street, Hamilton.

2000
Livingstone Aquatic Centre

A landmark project in Te Awamutu Event Centre "Livingstone Aquatic Centre" opens. Sponsoring 20-year naming rights.

Pat Cavanagh

Sadly Pat Cavanagh passes away.

Peter Clarke (Director)

Peter appointed as Director.

2005
Award Winning Bridgewater

Another landmark project Bridgewater Development wins a national award.

2006
Bay of Plenty branch opens

Opening of the Bay of Plenty branch in Papamoa.

2013
Taranaki Branch Opens

Opening of the Taranaki branch in New Plymouth.

2014
Avantidrome Home of Cycling opens

Livingstone completes the construction of the Velodrome in Cambridge. Officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in April.

2016
Auckland branch opens

Opening of Auckland branch in Penrose, Auckland.

40 years with Livingstone Building Ltd

David Livingstone celebrates 40 years within the business.

2017
Iconic Development

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David O. McKay Stake and Cultural Events Centre, opens its doors - with a dedication service held on the 17th June 2017.

David retires

David Livingstone retires after 40 years in the business. Remains an active Director on the Board.

Myles Whitcher

Myles joins Livingstone Building Ltd as Chief Executive Officer.

Mike Livingstone celebrates 40 years within the business.

Waikato Regional Council

Livingstone finishes the construction of another iconic building in Hamilton CBD for Waikato Regional Council and WSP.

Mike retires

Mike Livingstone retires after 42 years in the business. Remains an active Director on the Board.

Murray Gutry joins the Livingstone Board of Directors as Independent Chairman.
