Health, safety, and wellbeing

A strong health and safety culture is embedded in our business where we believe in empowering our people to always do what’s right. Our people are our most valuable asset so we strive to provide a safe and productive environment where they can thrive and deliver exceptional results, and most importantly go home safely to their whanau.

We also recognise the importance of supporting their mental health and wellbeing to encourage the growth of successful and happy teams. We provide regular wellness checks, an Employee Assistance Programme, and access to Mates in Construction, an organisation that provides excellent mental wellbeing support.

We invest significantly to upskill our team to ensure they are confident and capable of performing their job safely. We are proud that our people often advance through the ranks and bring their valuable experience with them as they progress.

How we know we're
doing it right

Compliance with legislation and guidelines is important to us. We maintain strong connections with the top health and safety organisations in New Zealand. In addition to this, we have completed external audits and prequalification’s to further enhance our health and safety protocols. These include:
• Prequal NZ (Cat 4)
• Site Safe - Site Wise 100%
• Safety, Health and Environmental Prequalification
• CM3 Prequalification
• Safety, Health and Environmental - Local Authority Prequalification

We conduct regular internal site checks and audits on every project, maintaining complete transparency throughout the process. We share these reports with our clients and stakeholders, showcasing our strengths and identifying areas where we can improve and outlining the steps we’ll take to make those improvements.

We have had no investigations, prosecutions, or notices from WorkSafe, which is a testament to our commitment to health and safety. We maintain a close working relationship with WorkSafe and deeply value their partnership.

We do what we say
we're going to do.

While we have all the standard procedures and policies you’d expect from a large construction company, we pride ourselves on keeping things simple. We place a strong emphasis on collaboration and communication with everyone involved in a project, using all information available to plan, set up, and execute the project in a way that prioritises safety. To help achieve this, we create a Site-Specific Safety Plan for each project, ensuring that everyone working on our site is fully aware of what is required of them.
All projects include regular programmed communication with all stakeholders, using tools like toolbox talks, task analysis, incident reporting, and coordination meetings to ensure our ongoing plan is still effective. If any improvements need to be made, we make them decisively.

We are involved in a number of industry groups, which keeps us up to date with the latest changes and developments in health and safety best practices. These include the Waikato Construction Liaison Group, NZISM Committee, Vertical Construction Practitioners, and Site Safe. Our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager, Kim Wihare, is a leading figure in these groups, which allows us to be part of the ongoing conversations around the future of health and safety in Aotearoa.

How we're helping preserve the
environment for our future generations

We are proud to hold the Toitū Diamond certification, which is a testament to our commitment to caring for the environment, our people, and our future. We understand that the construction industry is one of the main contributors of waste going to landfill, and we want to do our best to combat this. We have initially set a target to divert 75% of waste from landfill on all projects. We are aiming higher by continuously working to raise the bar and set more ambitious targets for ourselves.

But wait, there's more...

We know we can't keep plodding along doing the same old. We have to keep pushing ourselves to improve, upskill, let our people be heard, better never stops. So, we've decided to work towards ISO45001 - an internationally recognised Health and Safety Management System.

What our people say

“I feel safe at work”

“I understand how to carry out my work in a safe and healthy manner”

“I feel confident when I leave for work in the morning, I will arrive home safely at the end of the day.”
